The Hot-Shot Rule
Kat Cole was the former president of Focus Brands, which owns companies like Cinnabon. This podcast is a treasure trove of insights from her. The hot shot rule was particularly good:
There's a very easy-to-do reflective exercise. I call it my “hot shot rule” where I envision a badass in my role tomorrow and I ask myself “what is one thing they would look at and immediately address?”
We've all had that first-day perspective. That act of pausing, reflecting, and asking what someone else would do is powerful because it's not hard to see what you should do when you think about it through someone else's lens.
And then the trick is taking action right away. I take action within 24 hours.

Let’s dive into the main conversation!
Today, I am starting a series in which we will dive deep into social media's influence on food culture, food consumption, and, ultimately, your food business.
The goal is to really understand how we, as food entrepreneurs, can make social media work for us, rather than it feeling like a hamster wheel that’s eating up time and money with uncertain returns.
Talking of which, this is what food business entrepreneurs tell me when I ask them why they are posting on social:
“I am social media because everybody else is, really”
”I do it when I remember, but that’s it.”
”I am not sure, to be honest. We don’t get any sales out of it.”
Sounds familiar? It does to me. To change this scenario and create more clarity and certainty, we’ll start this series off by taking a look at the effect that social media has on consumer food choices.
The massive influence of Social Media on Consumer Choices
We all know that social media has a massive influence on virtually every aspect of our lives, including how we feed ourselves. What we eat is getting shaped and influenced by the content we consume.
We used to say that we are what we eat. In 2023, we eat what we see on our screens, for better or worse.
So how does social media impacts customers' food preferences and purchasing decisions? How can you, as a food entrepreneur, use this information to your advantage?
The Social Media Effect: Why It Matters for Food Businesses
With billions of users worldwide, social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok have become powerful forces shaping how we discover, consume, and share information about food.
As a result, these platforms hold considerable sway over all of our food choices and preferences. This can be great and educational, but it also has the potential to shape our businesses for better or for worse.
But rather than being at the mercy of its ever-shifting currents, with a little knowledge and understanding, we can make sure to maintain our course toward success.
